Adding fun to the lives of the disabled
MERIDIAN, Idaho (CBS 2) — The activity calendar of My Places is nearly full. There are typically three to four events a week.
Developmentally disabled people and their caregivers go bowling at Meridian Lanes or crafting at Wood Creations Boutique. They go to Zoo Boise, and Babby Farms. They have lunch at Watson’s Mystery Café or an Ice Cream Social at the Vision Community Church in Marsing.
It is all about building friendships and confidence.
Sometimes we forget that everyone wants to belong. They want to have friends and they want to have fun with those friends.
That’s what My Places is all about.
Janette Clark, the co-owner of Wood Creations said, "They come in, grab a craft, sit down, laugh, and have a great time and we get to experience the joy of those kids. They just light up and they're so cute. They just touch me every month when I get to see them. I am so glad to be a part of My Places.”
Mary Spears, President of My Places says there are two keys to success: Consistency and variety.
“I love crafting, but I know there are other people that aren't crafty,” Explained Mary. “There are people who would rather go be at the Hawks Stadium than be here crafting with me. It needs to have that variety. It also inspires people that they can share their passions.
"I’ve always been around -- Worked with, assisted, supported -- people with disabilities. My parents ran a group home with nine adults with disabilities and we lived there until I was five.
“Some people do very well in traditional services. But the people who don't... Don't. And need opportunities for growth and connection.”
She started small. One event a month. And gradually grew My Places into what it is today.
And again, consistency is key. “If you don't keep things consistent, you lose your people and you lose that momentum.
“I love events. I love planning. Coordinating. Talking to people. Getting everyone in the same room and just having a good time together. I love that.”
That kind of passion deserves a Pay It Forward.
