Club Nomadic Sues Mystic Lake Casino Over Last-Minute Cancellation Of Super Bowl Events

MINNEAPOLIS (CelebrityAccess) Club Nomadic Entertainment, the parent company to MInneapolis’s temporary venue Club Nomadic and permanent venue Nomadic Live, has filed a lawsuit against Mystic Lake Casino for it abrupt cancellation of using the venue to hose major events during the upcoming Super Bowl week.

Execs at Club Nomadic Entertainment, including owner Jack Murphy, claim to have poured $2.4 million into the 65,000-square-foot venue before the casino pulled the plug on it about three weeks before kickoff, according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. A lawyer for Club Nomadic now says it will spend $1 million tearing it down.

“It was a surprise when they canceled,” Club Nomadic attorney Josh Schiller told the paper. “They took aim at the quality of the building, which was erected but the interior was yet to be finished. That’s what the designers do at the end.”

The venue was to host Gwen Stefani, Florida Georgia Line, The Chainsmokers and Ellie Goulding but event company for the casino’s Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community said in a statement that it would be impossible to ensure an event at Club Nomadic would meet the tribe’s “standards of quality.”

Murphy, who had built similar venues in San Francisco and in Houston for last year’s Super Bowl, hosting Taylor Swift among others, told this reporter in December that he was recruited by Mystic Lake to build the venue.

“They said, ‘We saw what you did in Houston. Would you be able to do something here at the casino? We have a different demo.’ So I flew up,” he said.

Dakota February Events, Mystic Lake’s prdouction company, said Nomadic breached its contract by failing to obtain a certificate of occupancy by a Jan. 1 deadline, according to the Star-Tribune. Club Nomadic, however, claims the casin’s events company intentionally delayed the project.

The paper noted that ticket sales at the 9,000-capacity venue were floundering. They began at $100 and had VIP options as high as $10,000 but were “heavily” discounted in deals starting earlier this month.

Nomadic Live, which is built inside Minneapolis (Mystic Lake Casino is in Prior Lake, Minn.) is still expected to host Imagine Dragons, Pink, Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Lopez during Super Bowl week.

CelebrityAccess reached out to a representative for the company at press time who said Club Nomadic was declining further comment, although owner Jack Murphy released the following statement: “Construction of the venue was on track to be ready well before the events were to take place, yet Dakota terminated the contract and moved the events inside the Mystic Lake Casino, with no prior warning to Nomadic” and the company released, “We are disappointed Mystic Lake is choosing to not deliver the Club NOMADIC experience to the people of the Twin Cities. With that said, we encourage fans to enjoy our first-class experience at Nomadic LIVE at The Armory in downtown Minneapolis.”
