I need this on TV wtf- Wrestling fans go bonkers as WWE runs long-awaited Gunther rematch at a
It seems like WWE is closing in on revisiting one of the most physical rivalries in promotion’s history. Having said that, they ran Gunther vs. Ilja Dragunov at tonight’s live event in the Netherlands. It was their first meeting since NXT: TakeOver 36, where Dragunov ended Gunther’s 870-day reign with the NXT UK title, the longest till date.
In the land of the Dutch, they came full circle. This time around, the World Heavyweight Championship was on the line. And as one would expect, the title didn’t change hands with The Ring General remaining unscathed. However, if this was a premonition of things to come, the fans are in for something special.
The erstwhile Walter and Ilja, colloquially defined as wrestling soulmates, have yet to cross paths on the main roster. Back when Dragunov was drafted to Raw, he had a one-off confrontation with the longest reigning Intercontinental Champion. The two men were believed to oppose each other in the finals of this year’s King of the Ring tournament.
However, Jey Uso denied Ilja Dragunov a deeper run in the tourney, nabbing The Mad Dragon in the second round itself. Meanwhile, Gunther went on to lift the king’s crown in Jeddah. Since then, the fans have been clamoring for a match between the Imperium boss and the Unbesiegbar. For now, they have to find solace in the snippets that WWE has already posted across their social media handles.
Next weekend is Bash in Berlin—a PLE that fans thought was tailor-made for letting Gunther and Dragunov have a go at each other. However, despite being a local, The Mad Dragon doesn’t seem likely to travel to Germany for the show.
Fans call out WWE for not having Gunther vs. Ilja Dragunov on TV
Of course there was going to be an online discourse seeing Gunther and Ilja Dragunov wrestle at a house show. The fans on X are having a field day, venting their frustrations about why the aforementioned clash of titans wasn’t televised.
A ton of them were upset, citing their first encounter since the main roster switch needed to be on TV. Some argued that both superstars would’ve brutally chopped each other’s chests. There were some cool heads who understood the rationale behind putting the bout at a house show before exposing it in front of a capacity crowd.
WWE so often tests the water on big-time feuds during these live events, and Gunther & Dragunov might not be any different. Nonetheless, for now, the Austrian needs to focus on his upcoming title defense against Randy Orton at Bash in Berlin.
