Justin Fields reportedly struggling throughout Steelers training camp, unlikely to compete with R

Things are not looking so bright for Justin Fields. Despite having had a change of scenario this off-season by moving to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the young quarterback’s woes continue. The status quo was supposed to be Russell Wilson and Fields would compete for the starter’s role, however, the reality is significantly different.

A recent report courtesy of Mark Kaboly of The Athletic claims that Justin Fields is struggling. His report indicates that Fields showed inconsistent accuracy when it came to throws and instead, relied on his feet too quickly. This is alarming news, as it would mean that Fields is in a bad position.

The arm strength, speed and playmaking with his legs are undeniable. However, he showed inconsistent accuracy and relied on his feet too quickly after the first read. That stuff can be fixed, but maybe not throughout a training camp.

From this report, it can be inferred that Justin Fields needs a lot more time to get seasoned, and his instincts, especially when it comes to relying on his feet for the most part and prematurely running the ball are concerns that will take time to be corrected.

Justin Fields is unlikely to start for the Steelers this season

On the bright side, the report does acknowledge his arm strength and playmaking. The only issue appears to be an inconsistency when it comes to throwing the ball and making frequent errors when it comes to making reads on when to scramble by himself.

This is likely a habit that he picked up during his tenure with the Chicago Bears. Fields ended up relying on his feet far more than his arm. He ended up taking more hits than any other quarterback in the NFL as a Bear and while this was a matter of concern then, it seems to have morphed into a habit for him.

While the analyst acknowledges that all of his bad habits can be fixed, it will take significantly longer than just one training camp. This likely means that Russell Wilson would be the undisputed starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Justin Fields, albeit a strong competitor, may need more time to prepare for his time in the spotlight.

It is unfortunate to hear, especially considering the fact that Fields had a legitimate shot at proving himself via a second chance in Pittsburgh. However, as long as he continues to improve and progress on the right track, he will put himself in the right position.
