Oregon Dad accused of spanking 15 month old son 50 times
PHILOMATH, Ore.--Police took Brealan Mosieur into custody from his home here Wednesday after his wife and day care provider noticed bruising on the 15 month old child. That's bruising police told me is the result of an estimated 50-60 spankings on the child's backside.
Investigators say Mosieur told police his son wouldn't stop crying when he tried to change his diaper Tuesday night.
He says he tried to put the infant in time-out, but when that didn't work, he spanked the boy ten times... five to six swats each time.
Brealan's wife, Heather Mosieur didn't want to go on camera, but told KVAL News her son is doing okay.
Police say Heather told officers that when she returned home Tuesday night her husband said his arm was sore from spanking their child.
Neighbors say that crosses the line.
"I have a child around the same age and I probably have never spanked him that many times," said John Deeds, a father of two.
Whether intentionally or accidentally, Deeds admits sometime discipline can cross the line.
"When you get frustrated it happens, its very common in parenthood," said Deeds. "When you get frustrated to spank your kids probably a few more times than you should."
Others say there's no excuse.
"That's pretty intense, that's unreal," said Vincent Allen, who has two children of his own. "Fifty to sixty times, that's crossing the line."
Mosieur was released from the Benton county Jail on $75,000 bail, but is not staying at the family home. Police say Mosieur is under a no contact order with his son.
Benton County District Attorney John Haroldson says spanking crosses the line into crime when the discipline is not 'reasonable'.
It will ultimately be up to a judge or jury to decide if Mosieur went too far.
