Snoqualmie Pass drivers taking precautions following 15 car crash

Publish date: 2024-07-08

Road conditions in Snoqualmie Pass are wet with snow, slush, and ice in some spots, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation's pass report.

On Sunday, a 15-car crash caused I-90 eastbound to close down at milepost 34. The spokesperson for WSDOT, Summer Derrey, said people need to slow down, especially during these winter conditions.

Derrey claimed that winter came early, and people should be preparing. Snow plows have been seen on the roads, clearing the snow and making sure it's safe for drivers. Derrey also said it's important for drivers to do their part and drive slowly to prevent accidents.

"The past couple of years we have had more issues with driver behavior," Derrey said. "Our crews certainly do their part in keeping the passes clear, but we've had more drivers not obeying the chain-up requirements."

One driver who spoke to KOMO News shared that he’s always on the road, and on Monday morning, his commute was slippery and icy. Some drivers said they weren’t surprised to hear that car accidents were happening because of the snow, but they add now they’ll be more alert on the road.

“It’s always scary to hear something like that happening, but I keep on saying just take your time, drive slow, just make sure if you’re not comfortable driving in this kind of weather, just don’t," said Dmitriy Kirilovets, driving through Snoqualmie Pass.

WSDOT said the roads can sometimes be misleading, especially when temperatures reach below freezing. This is why they advise people to be alert when driving. Another driver passing through Snoqualmie Pass said when she's taking road trips, she's extra cautious about where she is driving.

“I think always be aware of what’s around you and be cautious," said Susan Johanson, who was driving from Canada." I always try to go around where the truckers are. I figure they are the ones that know what’s around, and if they are being cautious, I’m going to be more cautious too."

WSDOT said traction tires are advised, but it's important to check their pass report as requirements change depending on the conditions.
